Workshops consist of 4 x 1 hr sessions alternate weeks* in 4 potential blocks, on Monday nights, starting @ 7 or 8:20 pm 
* No sessions on Feb 17 (Family Day), Mar 30, Apr 13 (Easter Monday) & May 18 (Victoria Day)
Digging Deeper Workshop runs on 7 selected Thursdays; see schedule below.

Workshops that will run, the block in which they will run, and their timeslots will be determined by the number of registrants for each one.  
Since those with the greatest interest and support will therefore be those that end up being offered, please pass on this information to anyone who might also be interested in taking them with you.

For members of the jam session group who are interested in learning more playing techniques (chords, strumming patterns, fingerpicking, tab reading,, etc.) to add more nuances and expressiveness to their playing.

Ukulele Basics Workshop
No prior experience required. A 4-session workshop (1 hr every other week for 8 weeks) for adults (age 16+) who would like to learn to play the uke in a small group setting (8 people maximum). If you can already play a bit, but are only moderately fluent in changing chords, consider taking the Confident Beginners Workshop(Special advice & tips will be shared with any teachers, music therapists or community musicians taking the workshop.)

In addition to learning simple singable popular songs in a variety of styles (3-6 chords), participants will get the opportunity to request their favourite songs/artists.  Other techniques: different strumming patterns, chord variations, melody playing, and percussive techniques. Special emphasis is placed upon creating characteristic grooves and patterns suitable for improvisation in different musical styles.

Ukulele - Confident Beginners Workshop
A 4-session workshop (1 hr every other week for 8 weeks) for adults (age 16+) with basic prior ukulele experience who want to add nuances to their style in a group setting (8 people maximum).  Topics include: moving fluently between chords, different strumming patterns, adding simple ornaments and creating chord variations, plus basic melody playing (using tab notation).  Emphasis is upon more advanced techniques to create grooves and expression suitable to different popular music styles.   (And if you're comfortable with all the basics and are looking for much more advanced instruction, take a look at the  Intermediate Level Ukulele Workshop). Participants will get the opportunity to request their favourite songs or artists.   (Special advice/tips will be shared with any teachers, music therapists or community musicians taking the workshop.)

Intermediate Level Ukulele Workshop
A 4-session workshop (1 hr every other week for 8 weeks) for adults  (age 16+) with prior ukulele experience who want to add nuances to their style in a group setting (8 people maximum).  Prerequisite skills: fluency with basic major, minor and 7th chords, a variety of strumming techniques, plus basic melody playing and percussive techniques.  (Special advice/tips will be shared with any teachers, music therapists or community musicians taking the workshop.)

This workshop explores advanced chord types/variations, ornamental passing notes, strumming & fingerpicking techniques and patterns, playing melody-chords simultaneously, and more percussive techniques - all linked to particular popular music repertoire and styles. Participants will get the opportunity to request their favourite songs/artists. Special emphasis is placed upon creating grooves, and ornamental patterns linked to particular songs/styles.

Beatles Hits for Ukulele
This is a repertoire-based workshop designed for players who play at a Confident Beginners level or higher.  You will play 7 Beatles hits, learning strumming, picking and chord techniques that emulate the original versions, in keys ideal for singing and playing:  I Saw Her Standing There, I Want To Hold Your Hand, She Loves You, Can't Buy Me Love, And I Love Her, Yellow Submarine & Hey Jude.

Classic Country Hits for Ukulele
This is a repertoire-based workshop designed for players who play at a Confident Beginners level or higher.  You will play 9 Country Music classics, earning strumming, picking and chord techniques with authentic country music techniques, in keys ideal for singing and playing:  Don't Fence Me In (Roy Rogers), Crazy (Patsy Cline/Willie Nelson), Paper Roses (Anita Bryant/Marie Osmond), Ring of Fire (Johnny Cash), Gentle On My Mind (Glen Campbell, (I Never Promised You A) Rose Garden (Lynne Anderson), Darlin' (Barbara Mandrell/Johnny Reid), Could I Have This Dance (Anne Murray) & Don't It Make My Brown Eyes Blue (Crystal Gayle).  Here's a video of Len performing "Gentle On My Mind" at a WUPS event in early 2019.

Guitar Basics Workshop
No prior experience required.  A 4-session workshop (1 hr every other week for 8 weeks) for adults (age 16+) who would like to learn to play the guitar in a small group setting (8 people maximum). (Special advice/tips will be shared with any teachers, music therapists or community musicians taking the workshop.)

In addition to learning simple singable popular songs in a variety of styles (3-6 chords), participants will get the opportunity to request their favourite songs or artists. Techniques explored: open chords & variations, strumming techniques and patterns using a pick, melody playing, percussive techniques - with references to particular repertoire and styles. Emphasis upon using capos, and creating grooves and patterns suitable for improvisation.

A capo is required. Recommended brand: Kyser.  This particular brand applies pressure evenly to all strings (maintaining proper intonation), and is the easiest to position and change quickly with one hand. It also clips easily to the headstock when not in use, for easy retrieval.

Intermediate Level (Pt 1) Guitar Workshop
A 4-session workshop (1 hr every other week for 8 weeks) for adults (age 16+) with prior guitar experience who want to add variations and nuances to their playing in a small group setting (8 people)Topics: barre chords, intro to chord variations, intro to ornamental passing notes, strumming & fingerpicking techniques & patterns, intro to Carter Style (playing melody & chords together), percussive techniques, intro to open E chords. Emphasis is upon creating grooves and patterns linked to particular repertoire in a variety of popular styles (e.g., folk, rock, country, jazz/swing, blues, rock, reggae).  (Teachers, music therapists or community musicians taking the workshop be shown additional techniques applicable to their needs.)

Intermediate Level (Pt 2) Guitar Workshop
A 4-session workshop (1 hr every other week for 8 weeks) for adults (age 16+) in a small group setting (8 people), that expands upon the techniques presented in Intermediate Level (Pt 1) Guitar Workshop.  Expansion of Pt 1 Topics: chord variations, ornamental passing notes, strumming & fingerpicking techniques and patterns, Carter Style, percussive techniques, open E chords. New Topics: Rock and R&B grooves, Blues Patterns in E+ and A+. Special emphasis: creating advanced grooves and patterns for improvisation.  (Special advice/tips will be shared with any teachers, music therapists or community musicians taking the workshop.)

Popular Music Keyboard - Novice Level
A 4-session workshop (1 hr every other week for 8 weeks) in a small group setting (5 people maximum) for adults (age 16+) who can already play piano/keyboard (with good piano technique: strong fingerings, left/right hand independence, fluency with major, minor, 7th chords, scales, and can play in major & minor keys up to 3 sharps/flats) who want to learn how to play popular music authentically: i.e., adapting sheet music, playing from fake books, and playing by ear.   Topics: chord variations and inversions, fills, interlocked right/left hand patterns (including LH octave bass and passing notes).  Primary emphasis: creating stylistically appropriate grooves and variations with reference to particular repertoire in a variety of current and past popular music styles.   (Special advice/tips will be shared with any teachers, music therapists or community musicians taking the workshop.)

A 4-session workshop (1 hr every other week for 8 weeks) in a small group setting (5 people maximum) for adults (age 16+) who have taken the Novice Level workshop.   Topics: additional chord variations and inversions, fills, independent bass parts, improvisation patterns and strategies.  Emphasis will be upon creating stylistically appropriate grooves and variation with reference to repertoire in a variety of current and past popular music styles, all rooted in therapeutic techniques & goals.  (Special advice/tips will be shared with any teachers, music therapists or community musicians taking the workshop.)

Classic Rock/Pop Piano Hits (Pt 1)
A 4-session repertoire-based workshop (1 hr every other week for 8 weeks) in a small group setting (5 people maximum) for adults (age 16+) with proficiency with popular pianos techniques (e.g., as described in Novice Level  and Intermediate Level workshops) and an overall technical proficiency no less than a Grade 6 RCM level.   Familiarity with chord symbols / types (major, minor, all 7ths, diminished and augmented chords) strongly recommended, and fluency in keys up to 4 sharps/ flats.  You will learn to play 5 Classic Rock/Pop songs in their original keys, with all of the nuances:  Let It Be & Hey Jude (The Beatles), Imagine (John Lennon), Your Song & Crocodile Rock (Elton John).

WORKSHOP COST:  $65 (inc. HST) for 4 sessions, includes all materials presented in sessions (PDFs of instructional sheets & PowerPoint slides, audio links, demonstration audio, plus recordings of sessions)

Classic Rock/Pop Piano Hits (Pt 2)
A 4-session repertoire-based workshop (1 hr every other week for 8 weeks) in a small group setting (5 people maximum) for adults (age 16+) with proficiency with popular pianos techniques (e.g., as described in Novice Level  and Intermediate Level workshops) and an overall technical proficiency no less than a Grade 6 RCM level.  Familiarity with chord symbols / types (major, minor, all 7ths, diminished and augmented chords) strongly recommended, and fluency in keys up to 4 sharps/ flats.  This workshop is designed to build upon and extend techniques explored in Classic Rock/Pop Piano (Pt 1)You will learn to play 6 Classic Rock/Pop songs in their original keys, with all of the nuances:  Lady Madonna & The Long and Winding Road (The Beatles), Daniel (Elton John), Just The Way You Are & My Life (Billy Joel) and Bridge Over Troubled Water (Simon & Garfunkel).
